RunningSmart evolved from a simple idea: running should be enjoyable, not overwhelming. Many runners are left asking themselves: Which running shoes should I wear? How much rest do I need? How hard should I push during training?
My mission is to provide clear, science-based answers to these questions. Through personalised running assessments, gait analysis, injury rehabilitation, and coaching, I help you unlock your full potential as a runner.
My goal is to empower you with knowledge and practical guidance so you enjoy every stride.
I want you to run smarter, not just harder.
I’m Hannes Swanepoel, the biokineticist behind RunningSmart. My journey began at North-West University, where I completed a BSc in Human Movement Science and Physiology, followed by an Honours in Biokinetics. Since 2010, I have worked in private practice, committed to helping people understand movement and return to the activities they enjoy.
My own running story started on a trail running date with my (now) wife. It wasn’t long before I was drawn to road running too, taking on longer distances and eventually lining up for the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon and the Comrades Marathon. With more mileage came more injuries — and more questions. I soon realised that many of my fellow runners were facing the same challenges, and that it was not always easy to cut through the noise and find evidence-based answers.
Over time, my professional work naturally began to focus more on runners. To strengthen this focus, I completed the NAASFP Running Coach Certification as well as the Running Repairs Course, which deepened my expertise in coaching and injury management.
Today, I provide detailed running assessments, design rehabilitation programmes, and coach runners. What I enjoy most is the challenge of complex cases and helping runners achieve their goals.
Outside of work, you’ll often find me running the quiet roads of Durbanville, lost in thought, or enjoying family time – usually chasing after my children on one of the Cape’s wine farms.
Biokinetics is the science of movement – using exercise to restore health and prevent future injuries. In South Africa, biokineticists are registered with the Health Professions Council (HPCSA),ensuring high professional standards.
We assess key aspects such as:
From there, we create personalised, evidence-based exercise programmes and track progress through regular re-assessments to keep your plan aligned with your goals.

Physiotherapists typically treat the early stages of an injury – easing pain, improving mobility, and helping you get started on the road to recovery.
A biokineticist takes over in the next stage, focusing on exercise to rebuild strength, restore full function, and help you return safely to sport or daily life. The two professions often work hand-in-hand, ensuring you’re supported at every stage of your rehabilitation.
RunningSmart works from two practices in Cape Town and Durbanville, making it easy for runners in both the city and the northern suburbs to access care and support.
Based in the High Performance Centre, our Cape Town practice is conveniently located near Gardens and Green Point. Here I work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes:
This collaborative setup ensures you have access to a wide range of expertise in one place.
Our northern suburbs practice is in the heart of Durbanville, alongside Bio-Health Biokineticists. I also collaborate with physiotherapists, doctors, and dietitians in the area to provide well-rounded care.
